In the Netherlands it is possible to formally combine Family Medicine Specialty Training with research training in practice as Family Medicine research trainees. This program prepares young Family Medicine trainees for a career as clinician-researcher. The program typically lasts 6.5 years leading to registration as a Family Medicine Doctor / Specialist and a PhD thesis. At the moment, nearly 60 trainees follow the combined program at one of the eight Dutch specialty training departments.
